Buying DVD home theater equipment can be just as daunting as buying audio gear. First off, most people don't even know that there's a new generation of DVD players out there. Ever here of theBlu-Ray 3D DVD Player by Sony!
Let's first explore traditional DVD players. Standard DVDs deliver video at a resolution of 720 X 480 pixels, which is about 1/3 the resolution of high defition's 1280 X 720. To go even further, only 1/6 of the even higher definition standard of 1920 X 1080. In other words, this means that anyone watching standard DVD content with a high definition television isn't taking advantage of their set's resolution capacity. If you've forgotten all of this resolution stuff from one of my previous articles, just follow the link below.
Here lies the problem with traditional DVDs. The storage capacity of a standard DVD maxes out at 4.7GB (gigabytes) on single-layer discs, and 9GB on dual-layer discs. This is simply not enough room to fit a high definition feature film.
The new generation of DVD players, have a capacity of 30GB + with the Blu-Ray up to 50GB, and they are capable of storing feature length films or movies in both resolution formats. The difference is in the technology. While standarduses a red laser with a longer wavelenght, high definition DVD players use blue-violet lasers with shorter wavelenghts. What a shorter wavelenght does is it reads smaller surfaces, therefore meaning that the data or information is compressed or packed tighter so that more can be stored on a standard disc size.
Presently, as far as we know, Sony is ahead of the game with it's Blu-Ray and it doesn't come cheap because of it's obvious capability of storing more data or information. (50GB). All others, such as Toshiba, are not far behind. Keep in mind that the Blu-Ray(Sony) has a powerful list of supporters in the film industry, which makes it somewhat easier in the marketing place.
Now you're all set to enjoy not only HD movies as it was meant to be viewed, but also enjoy your digital photos on your HDTV! Boy, that's a lot of High Definition to remember. Why limit yourself to watching your favorite digital pics on a computer screen, when you can be watching them on your favorite screen, the biggest screen in your house, your 50 + inch LCD or flat screen HDTV!
